Launch Ceremony of the Sustainable E-waste Management for Youth Employment Project in Central Province

On 16th July 2026, Mr. HORII Mizumoto, Chargés d'Affaires ad interim, attended the launch ceremony of the Sustainable E-Waste Management for Youth Employment Project in Central Province.
This project, funded by the Government of Japan with approximately 930,000 US dollars and implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO), aims to create green jobs utilizing e-waste and build sustainable local communities in Central Province through technology transfer, policy strengthening, and entrepreneurship support for the youth including women and the disabled.
The launch ceremony was attended by Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe, Permanent Secretary of Central Province, Mr. Wellington Chibebe, ILO Country Office Director and many stakeholders.
Dr. Mwanakampwe expressed his appreciation to the Government of Japan and reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening policies and laws for a safe, inclusive e-waste management system, advancing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and enhancing collaboration with Zambia Environmental Management Agency in line with national and global sustainability goals.
Mr. HORII expressed Japan's commitment to the project, which comprehensively addresses Zambia's multiple challenges including high unemployment and low e-waste collection. By treating e-waste not as a problem but as an economic resource and opportunity, he expressed his hope that trained young people will have more access to stable jobs while reducing the volume of e-waste and protecting the environment, and ultimately contribute to the growth of the Zambian economy.
