Commissioning Ceremony for Road and Bridge under the “Project for the Development of Basic Infrastructure in Settlements for Displaced Persons and their Host Communities”

On 15th June 2026, on behalf of the Government of Japan, Mr. HORII Mizumoto, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, attended the comissioning ceremony of road and bridge in Mayukwayukwa Resettlement, Western Province, for the “Project for the Development of Basic Infrastructure in Settlements for Displaced Persons and their Host Communities in the Republic of Zambia.”
 
The commissioning ceremony for the 25km access road and about 100-meter pedestrian footbridge in Mayukwayukwa was attended by many senior officials from the government and stakeholders, including Ms. Mavis Nkomesha, Permanent Secretary, Resettlement Division of the Vice President Office, Dr. James Wakiaga, Resident Representative of the UNDP and Mr. Tovin Kaneneka, Commissioner of Refugees.
 
The Government of Japan has provided a grant for this project amounting to about 5.9 million US dollars through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to improve livelihoods, mobility, and access to socio-economic opportunities for displaced persons and host communities in the Mayukwayukwa and the Meheba Resettelmetns, therefore, to enhance further local integration in harmony.
 
Permanent Secretary Ms. Nkomesha stated that the construction of new bridge and roads would enable people to access markets, schools, health facilities and government services, improving their livelihood and its overall economy. She also expressed her appreciation for the partnership among the Governments of Japan and Zambia, JICA and the UN.
 
Mr. HORII expressed Japan’s commitment to Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus approach, and commended Zambia for its long-standing generosity in hosting refugees and its progressive National Refugee Policy and local integration initiatives. He also highlighted that the project well aligns with fostering self-reliant communities and strengthening the friendship between Japan and Zambia.
