Attendance of Ambassador Mikami at the 35th Swearing-in and Prize Giving Ceremony of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zambia

On 20th May 2026, Ambassador Mikami served as the guest of honor at the 35th Swearing-in and Prize Giving Ceremony of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zambia (UNZA).
The establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine dates back to the 1980s. During a visit to Zambia by the then Crown Prince of Japan (currently His Majesty the Emperor), the first President Kenneth Kaunda expressed a profound desire for an academic institution dedicated to training domestic veterinarians, which subsequently spurred the construction of the school building.
Ambassador Mikami reflected on the historical establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the enduring cooperation between Japan and Zambia, spanning over six decades. He underscored that veterinary medicine plays a pivotal role in fostering Zambia’s economic growth by enhancing livestock production, ensuring food security, and mitigating zoonotic diseases while improving public health. He extended his heartfelt congratulations to the graduates who successfully navigated the demanding academic curriculum.
The ceremony saw the attendance of many notable figures from academic institutions and the government, including Professor Mundia Muya, Vice Chancellor of UNZA, Mr. Fredrick Mwila, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock(representative), Mr. Kennedy Kalunga, Permanent Secretary Special Duties at Cabinet Office. Gratitude was conveyed for Japan's long-standing support, particularly from institutions such as Hokkaido University and JICA.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Mikami also presented certificates of commendation to outstanding graduates.
