Grant Contract Signed for “The Project for the Provision of Solar Power System for Health Centre in Kabwe District, Central Province” under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects
2026/3/24
On 18th March 2026, Ambassador MIKAMI Akiteru and Ms. Elise Soerensen, Representative of Development Aid from People to People in Zambia (DAPP), signed a grant contract for the “Project for the Installation of Solar Power System at Kabwe Health Centre,” with a total grant amounting to 49,777 US dollars, funded by Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
With this project, DAPP will install a solar power system at the Railway Surgery Health Centre in Kabwe District to ensure stable electricity supply for essential medical devices, particularly for lead testing and treatment for children affected by lead contamination in the district. By strengthening the facility’s testing capacity, the number of testing is expected to increase from 1,360 to 3,400 per month, significantly reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment. The project is designed to contribute to improved children’s health, their educational attainment, and long-term well-being in the community.
The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. George Sinyangwe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Ms. Angela Chomba Kawandami, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services and other distinguished guests.
Dr. Sinyangwe emphasized the importance of uninterrupted blood lead testing in improving children’s health, noting that this project demonstrates the power of collaboration among the Governments of Japan and Zambia, and a civil society organization.
Ambassador Mikami highlighted that reliable electricity is indispensable for the effective delivery of healthcare service, and he underscored Japan’s commitment to improving access to quality social services based on its development cooperation policy for Zambia. He expressed his sincere hope that the project would contribute to protecting the health and dignity of children and to sustainable development in Kabwe District.
