This project will significantly reduce the time required for fetching water and alleviate the burden especially on women and children in the four villages. Furthermore, access to safe water will contribute to waterborne diseases reduction and improvement of the health of the communities. Additionally, stable supply of water for livestock and agriculture even during the dry season will increase the productivity, leading to improved livelihoods and sanitation for the approximately 12,000 residents across the four villages.

The signing ceremony was attended by Honourable Doreen Sefuke Mwamba, Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Honourable Collins Nzovu, Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Honourable Gifts Simuunza Sialubalo, Minister of Local Government, and Rural Development, and also officials from Kazungula District.

Minister Mwamba emphasized that the project will restore dignity and safety for women and girls, and aligns with government priorities such as human capital development, gender equality, climate resilience, and rural development. Minister also expressed appreciation for the Government of Japan’s community-driven, inclusive, and sustainable approach for the community development.

Ambassador Mikami highlighted that water is an indispensable foundation for health, education and economic activities, and expressed his hope that this project would contribute to long-term community resilience and sustainable development in Kazungula District.
