Inauguration of the “Prof. Imasiku A. Nyambe Water and Environment (WET) Laboratory” under the SATREPS Project “Risk-based Participatory WASH Planning and Citizen-data WASH Statistics for African Peri-urban Settlements (SPLASH Project)”

2025/9/29
On 26th September, 2025, Ambassador Takeuchi attended the inauguration of the “Prof. Imasiku A. Nyambe Water and Environment (WET) Laboratory” held at the School of Mines, University of Zambia.

The WET Laboratory was established as part of the SATREPS* project entitled “Risk-based Participatory WASH Planning and Citizen-data WASH Statistics for African Peri-urban Settlements (SPLASH Project).”

The five-year SPLASH project, funded by the Government of Japan with a grant of approximately 2 million US dollars (about 300 million Japanese yen), has been underway since 2024.. It aims to improve water and sanitation conditions in the peri-urban areas (compounds) of Lusaka by visualizing diarrheal risk to encourage behavioral change among the residents and by developing water and sanitation improvement plans. This contributes to the prevention of diarrheal and cholera outbreaks, as well as to the formulation of effective policies.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Mkuzo Chongo, Principal Water Officer, representing Hon. Collins Nzovu, Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Prof. Trywell Kalusopa, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation of the University of Zambia, Prof. Imasiku Nyambe, Vice Chancellor of the Copperbelt University, Associate Professor Hidenori Harada of Kyoto University (Project Leader), along with many other government officials and university representatives.

Ambassador Takeuchi expressed his expectation that the WET Laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art water quality and environmental analysis facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa, would make a significant contribution to addressing Zambia’s water and sanitation challenges. He also expressed his hope that the SPLASH Project would further deepen the cooperative relationship between Japan and Zambia and serve as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.
