2nd Japanese Language Contest

2025/4/2

On 29th March 2025, the Embassy of Japan in Zambia held the second Japanese Language Contest. This contest, first held last year, serves as a platform for Japanese language learners to showcase their Japanese language proficiency, and this year marked its second edition. The contest featured two categories: the assigned text reading category with 26 participants, and the free theme text reading category which attracted 7 participants, who all presented the results of their Japanese language proficiency.

At the opening ceremony, Ambassador TAKEUCHI Kazuyuki encouraged the Japanese language learners that the experiences and knowledge they gain through the study of Japanese language will undoubtedly contribute to strengthening the bonds between our two countries. And we received Mr. Denny Nsokolo from the Higher Education Authority of Zambia as a guest of honour to make congratulatory remarks and witness the whole contest.

In the assigned text reading category, participants were judged on the accuracy of pronunciation, intonation and rhythm, as well as emotional expressiveness, reflecting their efforts and practice. Particularly moving were the readings by those who read with emotion in line with the background and theme of the selected poems, leaving a deep impression on the audience and judges.

Meanwhile, in the free theme text reading category, participants read texts of their own choosing. This category tested individuality and expressiveness, showcasing a wide range of themes such as anime among others. The texts were chosen and read based on the participants’ unique perspectives and experiences were highly engaging for the audience.

The Embassy was very pleased with the feedback, with participants expressing a desire to continue learning Japanese and appreciating the opportunity to interact with other learners, and feels that this is a budding opportunity to further deepen bilateral relations in the future.
