Handover of the Emergency Grant Aid in Response to the Drought in Zambia

On 30th October 2024, Ambassador Takeuchi attended the handover ceremony for the Government of Japan’s Emergency Grant Aid in Response to the Drought in Zambia through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This aid will provide emergency food assistance to about 8,400 households affected by the drought in the Southern Province. Zambia has been experiencing serious food insecurity as a result of the worst-ever drought caused by El Niño.
During the ceremony, Dr. Gabriel Pollen, the National Coordinator for the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) under the Office of the Vice President, received the grant worth 2 million US dollars on behalf of the Government of Zambia. Dr. Pollen recognised the long-standing relations between the people of Japan and the people of Zambia and expressed gratitude of Japan’s gesture for the timely life-saving donation, to benefit over 41,000 affected individuals for the period of six (6) months.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Takeuchi reiterated the Government of Japan’s commitment to further strengthening its cooperation with Zambia, and to ensuring that the support contributes to the achievement of food and nutrition security in both good and disaster years. This is aligned with Zambia's Eighth National Development Plan and Vision 2030 for a food secure and prosperous Zambia.
