On 22nd August 2024, Ambassador Takeuchi attended the handover ceremony of Chamboli Hospital in Kitwe, which was funded by the 2020 Grant Aid Project for “the Improvement of Health Centres to District Hospitals in Copperbelt Province”. The total cost of the project amounts to approximately 32 million US dollars.

In the Copperbelt region, rapid population growth due to the expansion of the copper industry has resulted in a shortage of Level 1 hospitals that can provide advanced medical services such as caesarean sections, placing an undue burden on existing Level 3 hospitals. To improve this situation, the project upgraded the Chambori Health Centre and the Musiri Health Centre to Level 1 hospitals byadding new wards and  state-of-the-art medical equipment with the Chambori Hospital completed first. The opening of this hospital will improve access to healthcare for the people in the region and to strengthen local health services.

The ceremony was attended by over 1,000 people, including His Excellency, Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, Hon. Elijah Muchima, Minister of Health, Hon. Brenda Tambatamba, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Elvis Nkandu, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elias Mubanga, Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises, Hon. Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Elisha Matambo, Copperbelt Provincial Minister,  Her Worship Madam Mpasa Mwaya, Mayor of Kitwe, hospital officials, and local residents.

At the ceremony, President Hichilema emphasised that the opening of Chamboli Hospital, equipped with state-of-the-art medical devices, would benefit the entire region by promoting decentralisation and improving healthcare services. He expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the Japanese government to Zambia. Additionally, Hon. Mutima Minister expressed his appreciation for Japan's support, noting that upgrading Chamboli Health Centre to a Level 1 hospital allows local residents to access advanced medical care without the need for long-distance travel.

Ambassador Takeuchi emphasised that the handover of new Chanboli Hosptital during the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Zambia is a significant milestone and also testament to Japan’s commitment to further development for Zambia. He also mentioned that Japan’s support aims to contribute to the achievement of Universal Health Coverage in Zambia, expressing his hope that the bonds between Japan and Zambia will be further strengthened as the two nations continue to progress together.
