On 26 January 2024, the Joint Executive Committee for the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Zambia held its first meeting of the year to launch its activities in this commemorative year.

The Joint Executive Committee was established in December last year to promote the 60th anniversary here in Zambia, with the broad participation from the governments of both countries and various organisations based in Zambia that are closely related to the friendship between the two countries. Ambassador TAKEUCHI Kazuyuki of Japan and Ms. Etambuyu Gundersen, Permanent Secretary (International Relations) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Zambia, are co-chairing the Committee (Members list).

At the meeting on 26 January, Permanent Secretary Gundersen noted that Japan was one of the first countries to recognise Zambia's independence and the cooperation between the two countries since then have resulted in various milestones in a variety of areas, including agriculture, energy, health, education, infrastructure, and private sector development. She stated that the Committee would work together to promote commemoration projects and events. Ambassador Takeuchi also stated that Japan has been one of the best friends of Zambia since the Zambian flag was raised at the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, and with this spirit, the Japanese community and the Embassy of Japan will cooperate in making the 60th anniversary successful.

The Executive Committee then officially adopted the anniversary logo and discussed the various events planned for the year.
