2024/1/26

On 25th January 2024, Ambassador TAKEUCHI Kazuyuki and Honourable Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, Minister of Finance and National Planning, singed and exchanged notes for “the Project for the Enhancement of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education”, amounting to a total grant of 1.644 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 11 million US dollars).

The Project aims to improve the quality of education at STEM secondary schools by expanding classrooms and providing equipment specialised for chemistry experiments, designing and technology training, which ultimately contribute to the development of the population specialised in science, math and technology areas.

The Government of Zambia has identified strengthening STEM education as a key intervention in its Eighth National Development Plan and National Education Policy. In the context of Zambia's high fertility rate and increasing school enrolment as a result of the free education policy, the development of educational infrastructure and the promotion of STEM education are becoming more important.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Takeuchi mentioned that it was a great honour to be able to contribute to improving the quality of education for Zambia's young people, who are the future of the country, and to the development of a healthy population, both physically and mentally. Ambassador stated that the project was launched in the year of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Zambia, and hoped that the project would lay a renewed and solid foundation for bilateral cooperation to flourish in the decades to come.

The Government of Japan has been providing various forms of assistance in the field of education in Zambia since 1998 to the present, including the construction of primary schools and strengthening the capacity and skills of teachers. We will continue to support the country’s education development.
