Ambassador Takeuchi attended the Handover Ceremony of the Medical Equipment at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zambia
2023/6/14
On 14 June 2023, Ambassador Takeuchi attended a handover ceremony of the medical equipment at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zambia (UNZA) in the presence of Her Honour the Vice President, Mrs. Mutale W.K. Nalumango. The provision of the equipment is based on the notes exchanged between Japan and Zambia in December 2018 for the grant aid by the Economic and Social Development Programme, offering assistance worth 500 million yen (approx. 3.7 million USD).
The grant will promote the digitisation of diagnostic data with the installation of high-quality medical equipment such as mobile X-ray machines, CT scanners and anesthesia machine, as well as replacement of obsolete equipment and machinery.
It is also expected to contribute to further improvement of the quality of research, clinical practice and education of the School in collaboration with the Clinical Studies Enhancement Project (CSEP), which has been implemented since 2021 by JICA.
In his speech, Ambassador Takeuchi said that veterinary expertise is not only necessary to prevent health hazards such as zoonosis, but also crucial in stabilising food supplies in Zambia and other countries. He expressed his hope that the School will become one of the finest educational and research institutions in the world, and contribute to the further development of Zambia, and to even stronger bilateral relations between the two countries.
Vice President Nalumango expressed her gratitude to Japan on behalf of President Hichilema and said that the two countries have been all-weather friends since the foundation of the country in 1964, and today’s grant is a testimony to the strong ties and friendship between the two countries. Vice President said the state-of-the-art equipment provided would enhance the teaching and research capacity of the veterinary school and demonstrate the importance of international partnerships in tackling global issues such as disease control and animal health.
After his speech, Ambassador Takeuchi handed over a list of provided equipment to Vice President Nalumango.
The Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. King Nalubamba, showed and explained the guests the donated medical equipment.
