Signing Ceremony of the Exchange of Notes for Grant Assistance “The Project for Upgrading Health Centres to District Hospitals in Copperbelt Province “
2023/3/21
On 16th March 2023, H.E. Mr. TAKEUCHI Kazuyuki, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, and the Hon. Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, Minister of Finance and National Planning of the Republic of Zambia, signed the Exchange of Notes for additional Grant Assistance for “the Project for Upgrading Health Centres to District Hospitals in Copperbelt Province” at the Ministry in Lusaka. This Programme was originally planned with a budget of 2.65 billion Japanese yen, and 1.88 billion Japanese yen will be additionally provided by the signing this time. The total amount of the project is now 4.534 billion Japanese yen (or approx. 42 million US dollars). This aims to improve basic medical services in Ndola and Kitwe Districts through upgrading health centres to District Hospitals.
This Project is expected to contribute to bringing about improved access of a large number of civil population of Copperbelt Province to advanced medical services, and mitigate the current situation being experienced by both Chamboli and Mushili Health Centres, where the patients who need to take advanced treatments have to go to Level 2 and 3 hospitals located far away. Also once upgraded, the hospitals are expected to accept 5,000 normal birth deliveries and conduct 10,000 X-ray inspections a year. Furthermore, demands for Level 3 hospitals are expected to reduce by 1,000 a year in each district, contributing to strengthening referral systems. This is further expected to prevent chronic congestion of surrounding advanced hospitals in the province most effectively, and thereby contribute to the consolidation of the Provincial referral system as a whole by reducing the number of unnecessary referrals.
Japan is committed to playing its role in the development of Zambia as a model for Africa, and endeavours to contribute to achieving the nation’s sustainable development in the end, including the health sector.
