Contract Signing Ceremony for the Project for Construction of Amala Vocational School for Vulnerable Orphans and Disabled Children in Chongwe District, Lusaka Province under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects

2022/11/30
On 14th November 2022, H.E. Mr. MIZUUCHI Ryuta, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, and Sr. Nirmala Savarimuthu, the Mission Superior of Congregation of the Immaculate Conception Sisters (CIC), signed a grant contract amounting up to 96,000 US dollars for “The Project for Construction of Amala Vocational School for Vulnerable Orphans and Disabled Children in Chongwe District, Lusaka Province” under Japanese framework of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
CIC has been engaged in philanthropic activities in Zambia mainly in the fields of education, medical care, and social development since 1994. Currently, they operate an orphanage, a learning center for deaf children, etc. Since there is no vocational training school specifically for orphans and young people with disabilities in the district, opportunities for orphans and disabled people to participate in social activities and employment are limited.
Given the circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to assist by extending the grant for constructing a vocational school (1×7) with a library and office for vulnerable orphans and disabled children. Through the implementation of this project, it is expected that every year, a maximum of 700 children will be able to acquire skills and knowledge through seven programs such as cooking, dressmaking, crafts, etc. It will also lead to the social independence of graduates and improve the rate of employment.
During the ceremony, Mr. MIZUUCHI expressed hope that as many sons and daughters from Amala Vocational School for Vulnerable Orphans and Disabled Children as possible will acquire employable life skills which enable them to be self-reliant.
