The Opening Ceremony of a Mother’s Shelter at Mwapula Health Post took place at the Mwapula Health Post in Chisamba District on 12th October, 2021. The construction of this facility was implemented as a part of the“Project for Improvement of Maternal and Child Healthcare in Mwapula Catchment, Chisamba District”, which was granted to ROCINANTES in March, 2021, amounting to 357,377 USD as the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO projects.

Dignitaries present at the event included H.E. Mr. MIZUUCHI Ryuta, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, Hon. Credo Nanjuwa, Minister of Central Province, His Royal Highness Senior Chief Chamuka, Chisamba District, Mr. TANAKA Yuta, Project Manager, ROCINANTES Zambia.

This project aims to promote the expectant mothers in the Mwapula catchment to receive appropriate prenatal and postnatal services as well as facilitated safe delivery at Mwapula Health Post. Under the project, ROCINANTES established the Mother’s Shelter at the premises of Mwapula Health Post, which accommodates prenatal and postnatal women safely. Also, ROCINANTES will further facilitate the proper operation and maintenance of the Mother’s Shelter by health post staff and SMAGs (Safe Motherhood Action Group) in order to increase the number of facility deliveries in the catchment. Furthermore, the maternal and child health services will be enhanced as SMAGs’ and health post staff’s perinatal knowledge and skills and SMAG activities are strengthened through this project.

Through the “Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects” scheme, the Government of Japan provides grant assistance to Japanese NGOs which implement economic and social development projects in developing countries.
