2021/4/22

On 21st April, 2021, H.E Mr. MIZUUCHI Ryuta, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, and the Hon. Dr. Bwalya Ng’andu, Minister of  Finance of the Republic of Zambia, signed and exchanged notes for the Grant Aid for “Economic and Social Development Program,” at the Ministry of Finance in Lusaka. This grant amounts to 300 million Japanese Yen (approx. 2.76 million US Dollars).

The project is to provide various types of landfill equipment meant for solid waste management around the City of Lusaka, in response to a request from the Lusaka City Council, through the Ministry of Local Government.

This project is expected to culminate into the establishment of the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management (LISWM) Company, which will strengthen Lusaka City Council’s capacity to improve the sanitary conditions around the city, thereby reducing the spread of diseases like cholera.

Furthermore, this project is in line with the Government of Japan’s support for strengthening waste management, based on the African Clean Cities Platform, as announced at the TICAD7 (the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development) in August 2019.
