Contract Signing Ceremony for the Project for the Construction of School Buildings at Chitakata Community School in Kabwe District, Central Province under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects
2021/3/31
On 15th March 2021, Mr. MIZUUCHI Ryuta, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, and Dr. Zikani Kaira, Kabwe District Education Board Secretary, signed a grant contract amounting up to 71,246 US dollars for “The Project for the Construction of School Buildings at Chitakata Community School in Kabwe District” under Japan’s framework of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
Established in 2001, Chitakata Community School has been accepting many pupils from surrounding communities. As of 2020, the school accommodated approximately 200 pupils from Grade 1 to 7. However, the school building itself has deteriorated over the years, with consequences such as roofs, windows and furniture totally or partially destroyed. Pupils are forced to sit on the floor during lessons, resulting in a high drop-out rates among them, particularly during the cold season.
Given the circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to extend assistance for the construction of 2 classroom buildings, a borehole, 3 toilets and a handwashing facility.
Through the implementation of this project, the school will be able to accommodate up to 420 pupils from Grade 1 to 9, in a proper learning environment. Furthermore, the construction of the sanitary facilities will help prevent the spread of infectious diseases, not to mention COVID-19.
