2020/12/18

On 10th December, the handover ceremony for “The Project for Construction of Public Toilets for the Community in Samfya District, Luapula Province” was held at Twashuka Club Office. The ceremony was attended by Mr. SUGIURA Toshio, Chargé d’Affaires Ad Interim of Japan to the Republic of Zambia and distinguished guests including Fr. Anthony Kasaba Muchengwa, Catholic Priest, Mr. Kunda Chipalo, Environment Health Technician of District Health Office, Ms. Getrude Chabu, Mwaba Primary School on behalf of District Education Board Secretary, and Mr. George Ching’andu, Club Chair Person of Twashuka Club, totaling about 50 people.
Since its establishment in 2013, Twashuka Club has committed to health and hygiene interventions through a varieties of activities including sensitisation and training on health staff. Yet, poor hygiene practices such as open defecation remained due to inadequate toilet facilities. This has caused the contamination of underground water and soil, resulting in the spread of diarrhea, cholera, and other water-borne diseases.
Against this background, the Government of Japan decided to extend the assistance for the construction of 27 public toilet facilities with Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) toilets and shower rooms, with the total fund amounting to 50,973 US Dollars. With the completion of the project, approximately 8,000 people are now able to have access to the improved sanitation facilities as well as encouraged to practice improved hygienic behavior, thereby expected to improve health and sanitary conditions in the community.
During the ceremony, Mr. SUGIURA stressed the importance of community ownership and expressed his hope that facilities will be fully utilised and well-managed with the cooperation of all stakeholders.
