On 7th December 2020, Mr. SUGIURA Toshio, Chargé d’Affaires Ad Interim of Japan to the Repiblic of Zambia, and Ms. Sara Larios, Executive Director of Unidikumbukire Project Zambia, signed the grant contract of the Grant Assistance for Grassroot Human Security Projects titled “The Project for the Rehabilitation of the Water Supply System in Katombora, Kazungla District, Southern Province” amounting to 115,648 US dollar.
Since its establishment in 1990s, the Water Supply System has been the main source of drinking and domestic/public water for residents and public facilities; schools and health posts in Katombora community. However in October 2019, due to the deterioration over time and major break down in the main pump, the system was brought in a complete halt. This forced people to fetch water from the river and shallow well and untreated water use has caused the increase in in diarrhea and other skin infectious cases in the community, with about 40 cases are found on a monthly basis.
Under the circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to extend the assistance for the rehabilitation of the Water Supply System as well as the installation of new distributional network to nearby communities namely Maluka and Mushekwa.
Through the implementation of the project, the accessibility to clean and safe water around 800 residents and 3,000 people who uses public facilities will be improved, expecting to reduce the number of water-born diseases in the Katomora area.
