On 9th and 10th November 2019, the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Zambia co-hosted, together with Zambia Kyokushin-Karate Organisation, the 10th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament at the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka.

Against the background that Karate will be one of the events at the 2020 Olympic Games Tokyo, about 170 male and female Karatekas of such Karate schools as Kyokushin-kan, Shoto-kan and Dento-kan in Zambia as well as Karatekas from neighbouring Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Angola and New Zealand participated in the tournament to compete in Kata, Semi-Contact and Full-Contact categories and demonstrated their skills out of their practices.

On 10th November, Mr. Gibson Muyaule, Deputy Director for Sport, on behalf of Hon. Emmanuel Mulenga, Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development and Mr. Ryuta Mizuuchi, Ambassador-Designate of Japan to the Republic of Zambia addressed the gathering before the finals. The winners received their medals and trophies. The results in this tournament are so significant that they may be reflected in the selection of the Zambian national team.

It is hoped that the yearly Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament will help further development of Karate in Zambia, that Karate will play a key role in enhancing mutual understanding between Japan and Zambia, and that the exchanges between the two countries will further be deepened.
