Signing Ceremony for the Project for the Project for Construction of Public Toilets for the Community in Samfya District, Luapula Province under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects

2019/3/19

On 6th March 2019, Mr. Hidenobu Sobashima, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, and Mr. George Ching’andu, Chairperson of Twashuka Club, signed a grant contract amounting to up to 50,973 US Dollars for implementing a project of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects “the Project for Construction of Public Toilets for the Community in Samfya District, Luapula Province”.

Twashuka Club which was established in 2011 has been supporting orphans, vulnerable children and people with HIV/AIDS, offering skills training to the youth and women, and implementing agricultural projects to enhance the lives of community members.

However, the community where the Twashuka Club is working only had simple toilets which easily collapsed against the heavy rain. In addition, insufficient toilet facilities contributed to the spread of  water-borne diseases in the community.

Under the circumstances, Twashuka Club prepared a plan to construct 27 units of new toilets equipped with ventilators and reinforced by concrete, in the community, and requested the Government of Japan to fund the plan.

With the new toilets, the toilets facilities in the community will improve, the water-borne diseases may decrease and the sanitation and health environment will improve.
