On the18th January, a Handover Ceremony of X-ray equipment provided by the Grant Assistance for Economic and Social Development Programme by the Government of Japan, was held in Kafue General Hospital. About 150 people were present at this event including Mr.Hidenobu Sobashima, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, the Hon. Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, Minister of Health, Mr. Joseph Kamana, Kafue District Commissioner, Dr. Muntanga Mapani, Medical Superintendent, Kafue General Hospital, Mr. Tsuyoshi Yato, General Manager, Toyota Tsusho Zambia and Mr. Takeo Hata, Managing Director, Fuji Film South Africa, as well as other invited guests and many residents of Kafue District totaling about 150.

Many medical machines are too old for effective use in Zambia, and, therefore, medical personnel are able to diagnose only a limited number of patients per day, hindering the efficiency of medical services. The Grant Assistance by the Government of Japan, amounting to up to 200 million Yen or about 20 million Kwacha, was used to provide high quality Japanese X-ray equipment to a total of 13 hospitals throughout Zambia.

Thus, the assistance from Japan is contributing to achieving Universal Health Coverage, which means the provision of basic health services to every individual at an affordable cost, in Zambia.
