Signing Ceremony for the Project for the Construction of a Theatre in St. John Paul II Hospital in Lusaka under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects
2018/3/27

On 21st March 2018, Mr. Hidenobu Sobashima, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, and Dr. Margaret Mweshi, Executive Director of St. John Paul II Hospital, signed a grant contract amounting to up to 89,917 US Dollars, or 861,381 Zambian Kwacha, for the implementation of a project of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, “the Construction of a Theatre in St. John Paul II Hospital in Lusaka”.
The Hospital has been providing medical services for a number of people, and for children with disabilities and economically vulnerable people free of charge. However, the hospital was able to conduct only 669 surgeries out of about 7,000 checked patients in 2016 as there was only one operation room in the Hospital, among other reasons. Under the circumstances, the Hospital requested the Government of Japan to fund the construction of a theatre with 2 operation rooms to conduct surgeries to more patients who need them.
When completed, the hospital will be able to conduct about 3,000 surgeries a year using the new operation rooms and the existing operation room.
