On 3rd February 2024, the Embassy of Japan in Zambia held “JAPAN DAY” at Manda Hill Shopping Mall as one of the Japan-Zambia 60th anniversary commemoration events, in collaboration with JICA, Nerd Otaku and Hokkaido University Africa Office.

The venue was decorated with exhibits on Japanese culture, and visitors were offered hands-on activities such as Yukata (kimono) dressing, Origami (papercraft) and calligraphy and shogi (Japanese chess), as well as tasting of the Japanese green tea. There were also information corners, set up by our cooperation partners, on studying in Japan, learning Japanese language and discovering pop culture such as anime and manga.

During the event, the quiz competition was also held, and Ambassador Takeuchi congratulated the winner with commemorative gifts. At the end of the event, the Awa Odori, one of the three major Bon Odori (dances) of Japan, was performed by a staff member of JICA Zambia Office to the great applause of the audience. (For information on Bon Odori, please see this page.)

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Embassy of Japan will hold annual events in a special commemorative way with our partners. We hope that such events would help promote cultural exchange between Japan and Zambia, enhancing mutual understanding between the two nations in an enjoyable manner.
