Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Project for Construction of Amala Vocational School for Vulnerable Orphans and Disabled Children in Chongwe District, Lusaka Province under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects

2023/1/9
On 28th December 2022, Mr. OMINATO Satoshi, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Zambia, attended the groundbreaking ceremony for “the Project for Construction of Amala Vocational School for Vulnerable Orphans and Disabled Children in Chongwe District, Lusaka Province,” which has been launched by the Immaculate Conception Sisters (CIC) with Japan's “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.”
CIC has been engaged in philanthropic activities in Zambia mainly in the fields of education, medical care, and social development since 1994. Currently, they operate an orphanage, a learning centre for deaf children, etc. Since there is no vocational training school specifically for orphans and young people with disabilities in the district, opportunities for orphans and disabled people to participate in social activities and employment are limited.
Given the circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to extend the grant for constructing a vocational school along with a library and office for vulnerable orphans and disabled children. Through the implementation of this project, it is expected that every year, maximum of 700 children will be able to acquire skills and knowledge through participating seven programs such as cooking, dressmaking, crafts, etc. It will also lead to the social independence of graduates and improve the rate of employment.
During the ceremony, Mr. Ominato laid the first foundation block and planted palm trees at the project site.
