MEXT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME 2026

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to Zambian students who wish to study postgraduate courses at Japanese universities as Research Students (either regular students or non-regular students) under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Programme.
 
The scholarship covers following benefits:
1. Full tuition
2. Monthly allowance
3. Round trip flight between Zambia and Japan
 
You can apply either by emailing the required documents to jez.pr@lu.mofa.go.jp or by sending/bringing them in hardcopy to the Embassy. If applying by e-mail, please mention [MEXT, surname and first name] in the subject line. Please be advised that we cannot accept e-mails exceeding 10 MB in size. If your email size is more than 10MB, you have to send other attachments separately. However, please make sure you must write your name in the subject line.

RESEARCH STUDENTS

1. Currently Open for Application:
Yes
 
2. Duration:
a) Non-regular students: 18 or 24 months until the end of March 2028
b) Regular students: Necessary period for the completion of the regular course.
Extension may be granted if you proceed to a further degree programme.
 
3. Departure Date:
April or September/October 2026
 
4. Placement at University:
MEXT conducts university placement, based on your “Placement Preference Application Form” and a letter of provisional acceptance you obtain from Japanese universities.
 
5. Application Deadline:
No later than Friday, 13 June 2025, 16:35 hrs
 
6. Selection Process:
a) Application deadline: 13 June (Friday)
b) Notification of results to shortlisted applicants: by 20 June (Friday)
c) Written test: 27 June (Friday) at the Embassy
d) Notification of results to shortlisted applicants: by 2 July (Wednesday)
e) Interviews: 4 July (Friday) at the Embassy
f) Notification of results of the Interviews by 9 July (Wednesday)

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

The MEXT Scholarship programme for undergraduate students has been suspended in Zambia. There are currently no plans to resume the programme.
