Handover Ceremony for the Project for the Construction of Chakwela Makumbi Primary School in Chipapa, Lusaka Province
2018/2/28

On 22nd February 2018, Mr. Hidenobu Sobashima, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, handed over Chakwela Makumbi Primary School to Sport2Build in Chipapa area, Lusaka Province. This project was implemented by Sport2Build using the funds provided by the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project by the Government of Japan. The event was attended by about 300 people including Ambassador Sobashima, Mr. Coster Chinkumbi, representing Her Royal Highness Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II, Mr. Charles Shalupa, Malundu Ward Councillor, and Giorgia Marchitelli, Chairperson of Sport2Build.
Sport2Build constructed a facility for pre-school children in Chipapa Area in 2014, and has been engaged with their education. However, for children for Grade 1 and upper grades, as there was no primary school around Mukwamba Village where this facility was, with the nearest primary school located in more than two hours’ walking distance from there, its access was not easy even in dry seasons. For this reason, building a primary school there had been long hoped for.
Under such circumstances, Sport2Build requested the Government of Japan to support the construction of Chakwela Makumbi Primary School, and the Government of Japan decided to extend up to 160,073 US dollars. With this funding, Sport2Build constructed a new building with seven furnished classrooms and procured agricultural tools.
As a result, about 180 children in the area are now able to receive primary education from Grade 1 to Grade 7. In addition, with the procurement of agricultural tools and the preparation of manuals for horticulture and nutrition, the education of growing vegetables and keeping harvested vegetables fresh and that of nutrition have become possible there.
