JAPAN PROVIDES 490 MILLION KWACHA to CHIPEMBI FARM COLLEGE

 

 

On 9th February, the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Akio EGAWA, presented on behalf of the Government of Japan, a Grant amounting to 101, 509 United States Dollars, or approximately 490 Million Zambian Kwacha to Chipembi Farm College to facilitate the implementation of The Project for Rehabilitation of Agricultural Machinery Maintenance and Repair Centre and Construction of New Building of Chipembi Farm College.
The Grant has been provided under Japan’s scheme called Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP). GGHSP was introduced in Zambia in 1990 and its primary objective is to support various development projects which enhance human security projects at the grassroots level. More than 150 projects have been implemented in Zambia since its inception.
Chipembi Farm College has been providing opportunities for agricultural technical training to students and local small-scale farmers. It has been contributing positively to the ensuring of food security in the rural areas by providing them with agricultural technical training.
It is in appreciation of the efforts being made by Chipembi Farm College that the Government of Japan decided to support The Project for Rehabilitation of Agricultural Machinery Maintenance and Repair Centre and Construction of a New Building at Chipembi Farm College. The funds will specifically be used for the construction of one new college building and rehabilitation of an agricultural machinery maintenance and repair centre.
It is hoped that the project will give the students better opportunities in accessing agricultural technical training. It is also hoped that the facilities will benefit the small-scale farmers in the surrounding community who will have a Centre to which they can take their machinery when it breaks down, and thereby contribute to increase in agricultural production.

Japan is faced with unprecedented challenges caused by the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the eastern part of Japan in March last year. However, Japan is now on a steady path towards recovery and reconstruction. The daily lives of those outside the affected areas, including the metropolitan area of Tokyo, have almost returned to normal. The infrastructure and economy of the coastal areas of Tohoku, which were washed away by the tsunami, have made a considerable recovery.

There is steady progress being made towards securing stable control of the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. By the end of last year, Japan achieved cold shutdown status, moving one step closer to solving the problem.

On behalf of the Government and people of Japan, Ambassador Egawa expressed their sincere gratitude for the kind sympathy shown by numerous organizations and individuals of Zambia. Despite the current situation, the Government of Japan remains committed to cooperating for the economic and social development of Zambia.
