THE SIGNING OF MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON THE JICA-GIZ PARTNERSHIP FOR WATER AND SANITATION IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

On 11th February 2011, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ*) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in their assistance to the Water and Sanitation sector in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Japan and Germany both have vast experiences in this sector, and the MoU is aimed at expanding their assistance by harmonizing their approaches and sharing experiences and knowledge in this field. The partnership is also expected to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2015.
The MoU was signed by Mr. Ejima, the Director General Global Environment Department JICA, and Mr. Andreas Proksch, Director General Africa Department of GIZ. H.E. Ambassador Egawa and H.E. Frank Meyke, the German Ambassador to Zambia, were amongst the guests at the signing ceremony.

*GIZ(The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit ): Established on the 1st of January, 2011. Germany’s three long-standing technical assistance agencies were consolidated into one organization. They include; Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst (DED) gGmbH (German Development Service), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH (German Technical Cooperation), and Inwent.
