Japanese Ambassador’s National Judo Tournament
On 6th August, the Embassy of Japan in Zambia hosted the Japanese Ambassador’s National Judo Tournament in association with the Zambia Judo Association, at the Olympic Youth Development Center (OYDC). The event brought together some 150 Judokas from 10 clubs around the country, demonstrating their highly skilled abilities.
Also in attendance were H.E. Mr. Kiyoshi Koinuma, Ambassador of Japan to Zambia and Mr. Raphael Mulenga, Acting Director of Ministry of Youth and Sport, delivering an address and awarding medals to the finalists. The awards are significant for participants in that winners are considered for selection to the national team.
Three Japanese junior Judokas took part in the tournament this year, bringing even more excitement to the event. Their performance was warmly welcomed by Zambian Judokas, making this a great occasion in sport exchanges. Judo has gained more popularity in Zambia, and proudly, one Zambian Judoka has participated in the ongoing 2016 Rio Olympic Games. It is hoped that Judo in Zambia will be even further developed, paving the way for Zambian Judokas who would bring excitement to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as well.
