On 11th March 2015, Mr. Kiyoshi Koinuma, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia presented on behalf of the Government of Japan, a Grant amounting to 100,029 United States Dollars, or approximately 670 thousand Kwacha to Congregation of the Immaculate Conception (CIC). The objective of the project is for the Construction of Solwezi Academy Learning Centre for Blind and Deaf Impaired Special Needs Children.
CIC started their social contribution work in Zambia in 1994, focusing on education, social and medical services. Now it operates an orphanage in Lusaka, a Girl’s high school in Mazabuka, the Business and Secretarial College in Kasiya, and the Deaf and Hearing Impaired Boarding school in Ikelenge.
Evidently, the number of facilities is still not adequate to match the number of Children with Special Educational Needs (CSEN) in Zambia. There is a growing demand for special schools for CSEN, and under CIC, which offers special education programmes in North Western Province, the residents as well as the Government have requested for the expansion of CIC activities.
It is optimistic that by Taking advantage of the expertise that CIC has in this field, the children who will obtain an education at the centre will grow up to be independent individuals with the ability to socialise with others in the future for their welfare.
