The State Funeral of the President of the Republic of Zambia,

H.E. Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata.


 

 

 

The President of the Republic of Zambia, H.E. Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata passed away at a British hospital on the 28th of October. The state funeral took place on 11th -November in Lusaka. On behalf of the Japanese government, H.E. Mr. Kiyoshi Koinuma Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Zambia attended the funeral.

 

 

The state funeral was held at the National Heroes Stadium from 9:30 to 15:00. The remains of the President were escorted in a coffin from the Office of the President to the stadium and there lay in state at the centre . After some Zambian song and dance performances, the personal history of the President was presented by a Mr. Mulenga.  This was followed by the mass of the requiem and a prayer, and hymns were sung in unison successively by the members of church. Accordingly, PF Secretary General, Mr. Lungu, then made his memorial speech, as well as H.E. Dr. Scott, Acting President of the Republic of Zambia. The President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr. Mugabe and some other officials also made a speech. There were thousands of Zambian citizens to witness the funeral at the stadium.

 

 

From the National Heroes Stadium, the coffin of the President was transported to the Embassy Park in readiness for burial. The route from the stadium to the Embassy Park was lined with large numbers of Zambians sorrowfully waving their last goodbyes to the departed President. The President was buried adjacent to the Presidential burial sites of past deceased Zambian Presidents. At the burial, Heads of State from various countries that were represented at the funeral came forward to lay their wreaths. H.E Mr. Kiyoshi Koinuma Ambassador Extraordinary to the Republic of Zambia placed a wreath from their Majesties the Emperor and Empress.

 

 

Foreign dignitaries that were in attendance included the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr. Mugabe and First lady, the President of the Republic of Mozambique, H.E. Mr. Guebuza, the President of the Republic of Namibia , H.E. Mr. Pohamba and First lady, the President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Mr. Kenyatta, the President of the Republic of Madagascar, H.E. Mr. Rajaonarimampianina and First lady, the former head of state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Gowon, the former President of the Republic of Botswana, H.E. Mr. Mogae, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Mr. Bilal, the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Mr. Ramaphosa, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Swaziland, H.E. Mr. Dlamini, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Mr. Mbabazi, the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, H.E. Mr. Chilima, the Chairperson of AU Commission H.E. Ms. Zuma, and Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex, H.R.H. Sophie, among others.
