JAPAN WEEK
~50th anniversary of diplomatic relations
between Japan and Zambia~
The Embassy of Japan in Zambia hosted JAPAN WEEK at Arcades Shopping Mall from 16th to 18th September, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Zambia. The Embassy used to hold JAPAN DAY as a one-day event for several years, but this year, the Japanese Cultural Experience event and Japan Film Festival were combined as “JAPAN WEEK” for 3 days with a view to celebrating Zambia’s Golden Jubilee year of independence as well as the milestone year of Japan and Zambia.
As Japanese Cultural Exhibits, the Japanese Tea Ceremony counter, Origami Paper Folding counter, Calligraphy counter and Kimono Modeling counter were set up, drawing a lot of attention from many Zambians and people from overseas. It was a precious occasion of experiencing the tea ceremony performed in the open air for the first time in Zambia.

About 500 people in total came to the theatre over the three days and enjoyed Japanese films.
At the last day of the JAPAN WEEK, Mrs. Mulenga Kapwepwe, Chairperson of the Zambia at 50 Secretariat, arrived at the cultural experience event, and expressed deep appreciation to the Embassy of Japan for contributing to the Zambia’s Golden Jubilee commemorative events.
Although there are not many occasions available for experiencing Japanese Culture in Zambia, the annual festival is expected to enhance mutual understanding by expanding the relationship between Japan and Zambia.
