GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY FOR THE PROJECT
FOR THE UPGRADING OF LUSAKA HEALTH CENTRES

On 11th July, the Ground-Breaking Ceremony for the Project for upgrading of Lusaka Health Centres took place in Matero, Lusaka District. His Excellency, Mr. Kiyoshi Koinuma, Ambassador of Japan to Zambia attended this Ceremony. The Government of Japan is providing a grant of 19.99 billion yen, equivalent to approximately 19 million U.S. dollars or 104 million Kwacha for this project.

The population of Lusaka District is 1.4million. However, because there is only one major tertiary hospital in the District, a lot of people are not able to receive health and medical care services.
The aim of this project is to improve conditions of health and medical care in Lusaka. The project includes construction of new wards and related facilities, provision of medical equipment at health centres in Matero and Chilenje, both in Lusaka District.

Moreover, in June 2013, the Government of Japan hosted TICAD V with the participation of Heads of State and governments from Africa.  At the Conference, the government of Japan announced that Japan will support improvement in nutrition and strengthening of the health care system to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for Africa’s health sector. Supporting this project is a fulfillment of this assurance.
