The JOGMEC Seminar on
Sustainable Development of Zambia’s Mining Sector

The JOGMEC Seminar on Sustainable Development of Zambia’s Mining Sector was held on 21 June 2013 by Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan, and Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Development, Zambia.

Dignitaries present at the Seminar included Mr. Tetsuji Nagatomo, Executive Director, JOGMEC and Hon. Christopher Yaluma, MP, Minister of Mines, Energy and Water Development. His Excellency Mr. Akio Egawa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Zambia gave a speech at the event.

In 2011, Zambia is among the top seven copper-producing countries, and the top five cobalt- producing countries in the world. Moreover, Japan’s most highly ranked import commodity from Zambia is cobalt, and copper ranks third. Zambia’s mining industry, particularly in copper and cobalt, has played a major role in underpinning Zambia’s economic growth. However, Zambia has been faced with the challenging problem of mine pollution issues.

During the Seminar, interactive discussions took place, with a  focus on mine pollution prevention for sustainable development of Zambia’s mining sector.
