On 29 November, the University of Zambia held the launching ceremony for the Japanese Language Course at the University with support of Hokkaido University Lusaka Office.
H.E. Kiyoshi Koinuma, Ambassador-designate of the Embassy of Japan in Zambia, Mrs. Christine Mayondi, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education, Professor Stephen Simukanga, Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia attended the ceremony, delivering congratulatory messages. At the ceremony, the Ambasador-designate handed over to the University of Zambia tablet computers donated by Toshiba Corporation. Also, Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers(JOCV) added excitement to the ceremony by performing a Japanese traditional dance “Soran Bushi”.

The Japanese language course is of great significant as the first initiative in Southern African region. It is hoped that this remarkable initiative will promote the exchanges not only in economic and political fields, but also in culture and academic fields. Currently, the University of Zambia is offering French and Chinese as official foreign language courses, but it has been decided to include Japanese as one of the language courses from next year.

Hokkaido University Lusaka Office was established by Hokkaido University as its first office in Africa at the campus of the University of Zambia, to deepen academic exchanges between Hokkaido University and higher educational institutions in Zambia and beyond.
