Signing of the Exchange of Notes for “Kazungula Bridge Project”
On 10th October 2012, the Government of Japan exchanged Notes with the Government of the Republic of Zambia concerning the international yen loan for the Kazungula Bridge Project. The Notes for the international yen loan were signed and exchanged in Tokyo, Japan, between H. E. Mr. Koichiro Genba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and Honourable Given Lubinda, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Zambia.
The Kazungula Bridge Project, amounting to 2,877 million Yen (approximately 36 million United States Dollars or 178 billion Zambian Kwacha), involves the construction of a bridge, railway line, road and One Stop Border Post (OSBP) at the border between the Republic of Zambia and Botswana. Currently, the border crossing is undertaken by ferry or a pontoon. This Project is expected to reduce the time of crossing the border from 30 hours to six hours on avarage, and lower the cost of crossing the border. It is hoped that trade will increase between Zambia, Botswana and surrounding countries in the region by the completion of this project.
